Business Acumen

Know How Money Works. Know How to Make It.

Most people leave school without ever reading a balance sheet, managing a budget or understanding how a business actually runs. Business Acumen fixes that. This is not a textbook economics course. It is practical, applied business education – from personal finance to entrepreneurship to pitching an idea to a room full of people who will pick it apart. You learn how money moves, how opportunities are built and how to back an idea with numbers, not just enthusiasm.

Financial Literacy

You learn to manage your own money first – personal net worth, saving versus spending, the discipline of starting small. Then you go deeper. You read a profit and loss statement, read a balance sheet, construct an income statement, understand interest, compounding and the difference between reinvesting and spending. You track cash flow using Excel and Google Sheets. By the end, you can look at a set of financials and understand what they are actually telling you. Most graduates cannot do this. You will.

Entrepreneurship

You study the difference between business people and entrepreneurs, and learn to identify both in the world around you. The SMILE Framework breaks down five types of entrepreneur – Systems, Money, Innovative, Lifestyle and Empire. Street SMARTS maps six paths to opportunity from self-employment to start-up. Social entrepreneurship connects business thinking to real-world impact. This is not about dreaming up ideas. It is about recognising opportunity and understanding what it takes to act on it.

The Art of Pitching

You learn to pitch. Not present. Pitch. The difference matters. You work through a structured framework covering problem, solution, revenue model, technology, competitive analysis, marketing, sales, people and culture. You identify five real opportunities, develop a business idea and pitch it Dragons’ Den style to a panel that will challenge every assumption. You also learn to build a proper business proposal from scratch. This is where ideas meet scrutiny and only the prepared survive.

Project Management

You study the project life cycle, common project management terminology and the tools used to plan, track and deliver. You develop a project plan from briefing through interrogation to completion, working in groups under real deadlines. Project management is taught within the context of a broader business proposal – because in the real world, a plan without execution is just a conversation.

AI in Business

You learn how AI is reshaping market research, financial modelling, forecasting and proposal writing. You study automation and its impact on industries, employment and the way businesses operate. This is not about fearing AI. It is about understanding where it creates leverage, where it falls short, and how to use it as a tool rather than a crutch.
