Throughout the course, students are encouraged to maintain a journal documenting their experiences at Quest. This journal serves as a valuable resource for the production of a personal development essay, allowing students to reflect on their journey and growth. Additionally, students gain practical skills in utilising various media formats effectively, including writing blogs, capturing photographs and videos, as well as editing and producing film clips. They are introduced to the fundamental principles of photography, videography, and journalistic writing.
Photography
Within the photography course, students delve into the rich history of photography while learning the basics of using a DSLR camera. They explore essential concepts such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, shooting modes, depth of field, and white balance. Furthermore, students gain proficiency in photo editing using different tools and software, including Adobe Lightroom. During the Men’s Core program, students have the unique opportunity to capture stunning wildlife, breathtaking sunsets, and captivating water reflections on Lake Kariba.
Videography
The videography course equips students with the fundamentals of using both DSLR cameras and smartphones to capture high-quality videos. They learn the necessary steps for creating impressive videos, including developing shot lists, setting up shots, and filming horizontally for optimal results. Moreover, students acquire essential skills in video editing using a variety of tools and platforms, such as iMovie.
Journal Writing
At Quest Africa, journal writing is a foundational practice that supports personal growth and emotional awareness. From the very beginning of the program, students are encouraged to keep a diary, which gradually evolves into a more reflective and intentional journal. This process helps them track their experiences, emotions, and insights as they move through the various phases of their journey. By putting their thoughts into words, students gain clarity, develop self-discipline, and begin to understand the deeper layers of their personal development.
The journal writing process is deeply rooted in Quest Africa’s five acumens: Technical, Natural, Social, Physical, and Business. These acumens serve as a guiding framework for students to explore and understand their inner world. Through consistent journaling, students reflect on how each acumen influences their behaviour, decision-making, and emotional responses. This holistic approach not only fosters self-awareness but also empowers students to integrate their experiences across all areas of life, ultimately helping them grow into well-rounded, resilient individuals.
Marketing & Website Design
Students are introduced to the foundational concepts of marketing and website design—two essential tools in today’s digital-driven world. We dedicate several days to each of these topics to ensure that students not only grasp the basics but also develop an appreciation for the complexity and potential they hold. Through interactive sessions and practical exercises, students learn how marketing goes beyond advertising; it’s about understanding audiences, crafting meaningful messages, and delivering value that resonates and builds trust.
Website design is approached with a similar depth, emphasizing the creative and technical aspects involved. Students explore the importance of user experience, functionality, visual aesthetics, and how a well-structured website can serve as a powerful platform for communication and brand identity. By combining theory with hands-on learning, we aim to equip students with the skills and awareness to either build their digital presence or appreciate these tools’ role in modern business and personal branding.
